Help to Close the Science Gap!

Inspire the next generation of science and technology innovators: volunteer for Scientists and Innovators in Schools!

August 18, 2009

Sci-Tech North is actively involved in regional Science Fairs and Science World programming including Scientists in Schools, Community Science Celebration and Opening the Door events – all aimed at inspiring students through exciting interactions with science, math, technology and innovation!

Scientists & Innovators in the Schools (SIS) is a program that helps address British Columbia's need for more scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians by promoting students' interest in these areas. SIS is part of the British Columbia Program for the Awareness and Learning of Science (BC PALS) and as such, is supported by the province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Education which makes it possible to reach grade K-12 students throughout the province free of charge.

Science World is currently updating their SIS volunteer involvement for the 2009/10 school year. Attached is a short questionnaire designed to inform them about your availability and, if you have been a past volunteer, to confirm contact information.  Your support helps Science World inspire the next generation of science and technology innovators.

The questionnaire also provides an opportunity for you to volunteer for Opening the Door, a unique networking event for Grade 10-12 students interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Students participate in panel interviews and networking sessions with science professionals from diverse backgrounds gaining insight into their work and the various career paths that were followed.

SIS provides training and support, and reimburses costs incurred during school visits, including travel, accommodation and presentation materials (within certain guidelines).

Please consider volunteering and help to close the science gap!
