The Ngoma district of Rwanda  has the highest infant mortality rate of any national district and it is widely accepted that about half of infant deaths can be attributed to malnutrition. A partnership between UBC and the Rwandan Institute, INATEK, is working towards researching and improving nutrition and health outcomes in this area.

In May of 2010, Kaylen was one of the first UBC students to participate in the Canadian-Rwandan partnership. Alongside five other UBC students and twelve local, Rwandan students, Kaylen worked on a baseline assessment of nutrition and food security.

On February 1, Kaylen will speak to her experience and draw on global context to highlight the importance of food security and nutrition.
